Bruehl Terrace

Bruehl Terrace, known as the balcony of Europe, is a lively focal point and Dresden's most popular boulevard, with an almost Italian atmosphere. It is called the balcony of Europe because of the wonderful view of the river Elbe with the Augustus Bridge and the row of historic buildings on it such as the Albertinum, the Green Vaults, the Academy of Arts and the Johanneum. The Bruehl Terrace was built from 1739-48 on the fortified wall by Baron Bruehl as a private pleasure garden. The garden was opened to the public in 1814, and the large open staircase was erected in the same year. The group of statues depicting the four parts of the day was added to the staircase in 1868.
