Catholic Court Cathedral
Almost 4800 square metres in size, the Court Cathedral is the largest church in Saxony. The Italian architect Gaetano Chiaveri was commissioned to construct the church. The balustrades and niches in the cathedral are decorated with 78 stone figurines sculpted by Lorenzo Mattielli, depicting the apostles, saints and church dignitaries. The treasures in the interior include a rococo chancel by Permoser, an altar painting by Mengs and the Silbermann organ.
The crypt contains 49 sarcophagi of prince-electors and kings from the house of Wettin, as well as their relatives. The heart of Augustus the Strong is also in the crypt, while his remains are in Krakow, as he was also King of Poland.
