Parade of Princes

The Parade of Princes depicts all rulers from the Wettin house in a larger-than-life parade of riders. The enormous mural was created from 1872 to 1876, in celebration of 800 years of the royal house of Wettin. The paintings, made using the sgraffito technique, were not very weather-resistant. Just a few years after its creation, damage was already apparent. The Porcelain Factory in Meissen offered to renew the painting using porcelain tiles. 24,000 tiles covering the 101 metre long and 957 square metre painting were required to depict the 35 margraves, prince-electors and kings, as well as 58 scientists, artists, craftsmen and farmers. This work of art was more durable, even surviving the bombing on February 13th 1945. Only 223 tiles had to be replace, while another 442 were added. The Parade of Princes is opposite the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) on the outer wall of the Stable Courtyard (Stallhof) behind the Long Passage (Langer Gang)  - connecting the Neumarkt (New Market) to the Schlossplatz (Palace Square).
