Residential Palace

The residential palace of the Wettin royal family stands between the Zwinger palace, cathedral and Bruehl Terrace. The origins of the residential palace can be traced back to the 15th century. It was extended in renaissance style in the mid-16th century, and in 1701, it was partly burned down. After reconstruction by Augustus the Strong, and modification in the 19th century in the neo-renaissance style, the palace was almost completely destroyed by the bombing in 1945. Reconstruction work started recently. The palace is to be completely restored by 2006 and used as a museum. The Hausman Tower overlooks the palace, offering a fantastic view of Dresden. Numerous exhibitions have already been held here. In the future, the state galleries will be housed here. Contemporary plays are presented in the Palace Theatre.
